LH2 piping on board a superyacht
Acclon Technologies recently completed a remarkable project aboard a superyacht where sustainability meets innovation. The project involved vacuum-sealing an entire liquid hydrogen (LH2) piping system on site. Applying vacuum technology in combination with cryogenics within a maritime environment presented several technical challenges.
LH2 piping with vacuum insulation
The installed LH2 pipes feature a double-walled design. The space between the walls is vacuumed to prevent freezing of the outer layer and to minimize thermal losses of the cryogenic gas. While this technology is well-established in land-based cryogenic systems, the uniqueness of this project lies in its implementation on a moving vessel.
The piping had to be evacuated on site. To achieve this, vacuum pumps and sensors were installed directly onboard. Limited installation space and small pump openings required an extremely flexible approach. Moreover, the ship’s power supply proved to be inconsistent. To ensure system reliability, additional safety measures were implemented, including multiple pressure relief valves.
High-tech in a maritime environment
Unlike typical laboratory or industrial settings, this project had to integrate advanced vacuum technology into an environment where space and aesthetics are critical. The execution demanded custom work down to the finest detail, with minimal tolerances and maximum reliability.
A project with character
Although we’re unable to share every detail, we can reveal that this project was completed aboard a world-renowned superyacht. A vessel designed with a strong focus on low-emission propulsion. Those who follow international yachting news will likely recognize the ship.
